Campaigns aimed at discouraging Uyghur women to wear headscarves are enforced regularly in the most traditional Uyghur areas of Khotan and Kashgar and occasionally lead to outbreaks of violence, like in the summer 2011 in Khotan, when deadly clashes between Uyghur demonstrators and police erupted. The tones of these political and social campaigns, which stress the “beautiful women’s hair” and the “right to make them wave in the wind”, are particularly adverse to the Muslim concept of woman, even if it should not be completely alien to the traditionally soft Uyghur Islamic religion.82

What is needed to be noted is that the condition of women is changing rapidly: According to the first region-wide survey on women’s social status carried out by the regional Women’s Federation and Statistics Bureau in April 2012, in 2010, 41.5% of women in Xinjiang had a job, up from the 10 years—before percentage of 14.4%. This figure includes both Uyghur and Han women, and data disaggregated by ethnicity have not been issued. The same can be said as far as Uyghur sex workers are concerned, a topic on which sociological research has not been conducted yet. At the same time, scholarly articles appeared in medical journals concern sex workers’ related diseases, and the measures to prevent and treat them,83 but no comprehensive disaggregated data according to ethnicity have never been released.
